The Threat of Dental Anxiety
Dental anxiety is a condition in which you are worried about going to the dentist. It is not like being worried about getting stuck in traffic, for example. This is being worried to point that you won’t even go or will actively avoid going to the dentist unless you absolutely have to. Dental anxiety can even get to the level where people will actually let their teeth and dental structure deteriorate. It can be crippling and severely dangerous and damaging to both your oral and overall health.
Dental Anxiety is Common
Unfortunately, dental anxiety is far too common. It is estimated that between 24 and 35 million Americans suffer from some level of dental anxiety. To put this in perspective, that is more people than the populations of the 10 largest U.S. cities combined. When surveyed, those who identified having moderate to severe dental anxiety attributed the fear to a bad experience at the dental office. So, not only are millions of people afraid of going to dentist, but oftentimes it is dentists who caused that fear in the first place.
Cure Your Dental Anxiety
The first thing you should do is identify where your fear came from and what caused it. This will help to put a face to what you are dealing with. Next, you should talk to someone you know and trust about that fear. This person needs to be someone who is not affected by dental fear, so don’t go and grab that friend or family member who would rather walk across hot coals before getting their teeth cleaned. (They may have even contributed to your dental fear.) Find someone with a healthy and unbiased view of dental care, and talk through your issues with them to see how dental experiences can be positive.
