Dealing with crooked teeth or misalignment issues can be a challenge to your self-esteem and your overall oral health. There are millions of Americans who are lucky enough to have access to great orthodontic care early in their lives. Some even have early enough intervention that they can avoid comprehensive orthodontic procedures.
Even while we have more children than ever getting the orthodontic care they need early in their lives, there is still a large portion of adults who could benefit from orthodontic treatment. Our Fairfax dental office has treated adults who had never received orthodontics and those who had braces but saw their teeth shift.
Here’s what orthodontic treatments can do for you:
• Crooked teeth
• Recessed teeth
• Rotated teeth
• Gapped teeth
• Overbites, underbites, and crossbites
If you have any of these issues, there are effective ways to fix your smile. Today I want to review two ways you can correct your teeth: traditional braces and Invisalign.
The Power of Traditional Braces
Metal brackets and wires have been the standard orthodontic treatment for the last several decades. We bond the brackets to the teeth and then move the teeth into a better position through wire changes. We know that braces can be distracting, but metal braces continue to be the best way to accomplish radical tooth movement. With metal braces, we can drastically move teeth into position, while correcting major bite issues. The process can be long, though, lasting about two or three years, but you’ll end up with a perfect bite and beautiful, straight teeth.
Aren’t braces just for children? Absolutely not. We recommend braces based on your dental needs, not your age. If you’re a working professional who needs braces, try not to focus on the treatment and instead focus on the benefits and the results.
Use Clear Aligners to Straighten Teeth
There is a misconception that all people with crooked teeth will need braces. That’s simply untrue. You read above that metal braces can correct a number of serious alignment issues, and it’s true that braces are still your best option to achieve radical tooth movement or to correct bite issues. But here’s the thing: not everyone has major alignment issues. There are millions of people out there who struggle with gapped teeth or mildly crooked teeth. For those people, we have an orthodontic system that doesn’t use metal bracket or wires. In fact, you’ll have nothing attached to your teeth at all.
Invisalign is a system that uses clear aligners to gradually move your teeth into a more appropriate position. The Invisalign plastic aligners are virtually invisible and can be removed for cleaning and eating. We ask that you wear the aligners for about 22 hours every day to see optimal results. As you might have already guessed, Invisalign is ideal for working professionals or adults who want to keep their dental treatments to themselves. Invisalign IS subtle. I’ve worked with patients who said even their closest relatives had no idea they were wearing an aligner. That’s one of the many reasons why Invisalign has nearly a 96 percent approval rating!
